Questions people ask

Why is the lender's number so much higher?

Lenders approve based on ratios, not your life. They'll often stretch to about 43% of gross income going to debt. That can leave little for saving or fun — which is what the Mountain-safe number protects.

Is the Mountain-safe number a hard rule?

No — it's a guardrail, roughly 25% of gross income toward housing. The point is to choose your number on purpose instead of defaulting to the maximum.
